'85 SE vs '93? civic

ok, this is very lame story...hence i lose but. my buddy had a 91? or 93... civic with sohc vtec. i havent had my car for very long and was semi new to manual cars. i figure this'll be easy. im following him out of town one day and he sticks his hand out and signals to "bring it" doin 25 or so i go to second and i am right on him but by the end of third and start of fourth his vtec just pulls him away. that should not be happening...i was shifting at the buzzer sad i couldnt keep up with him. i honestly dont think my 1985 GSL-SE is up to par...maybe bad combustion? all stock but well maintained with 177k miles. idk...it was a sad sad day.
